The Hannell Family Line: This is an overview of some of the main family members.
The Hannell Family is connected via my Paternal Family line, the Richs and like the Rich Family, originated in Bedfordshire. This family has been traced back to the birth of John Hannell in 1570 in Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire, my 9 x Great Grand Father. Very little is known of John other than he married probably circa 1600 but we do not know exactly where or the name of his wife. They had 6 children, Joan in 1606, Elizabeth in 1608, Richard in 1614, twins Edward (my 8 x Great Grand Father) and William in 1616 and Alice in 1619. The first 2 children were born in Leighton Buzzard, the next 3 in Heath and Reach and the last, Alice, in Buckinghamshire. No record of the death of John and his wife have been found.
Edward Hannell (my 8 x Great Grand Father), was born in Heath and Reach on 5th November 1616 and married a lady with the surname of Theede, (we have no idea of her Christian Name), most probably in Bedfordshire in the early 1630's. From this point the information is still sparce but a little better than the previous generation. Birth records for 5 children have been found, twins Abraham (my 7 x Great Grand Father) and Edward in 1635, Jeanne in 1638, Isaac in 1640 and Jacob in 1644, all having been born in Heath and Reach. Edward we know died on 5th September 1669 in Heath and Reach but we have no idea when his wife died.
Abraham (my 7 x Great Grand Father) was born in Heath and Reach in 1635 and married Rebecca Hawkins in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire on 20th January 1657, Rebecca having been born in Houghton Regis on 12th October 1639. They settled in Hockliffe, Bedfordshire and had 8 children, Edward in 1661 (my 6 x Great Grand Father), twins Elizabeth and John in 1664, Rebecca in 1666, Alice in 1669, Sarah in 1672, Mary in 1675 and Ann in 1679, all of which were born in Hockliffe. Abraham died in Hockliffe on 12th March 1718 and Rebecca in Leighton Buzzard on 31st December 1694.
Next we get to Edward, (my 6 x Great Grand Father), born in Hockliffe on 7th July 1661, married Elizabeth Rasan in Marston, Bedfordshire on 2nd January 1695, Elizabeth also having been born in Hockliffe in 1676. They had 7 children, Rebecca in 1696, Edward in 1698, (my 5 x Great Grand Father), Abraham 1st in 1699 (died 2 days old), Abraham 2nd in 1705, John 1st in 1709 (again, died 2 days old), John 2nd in 1711 and Elizabeth in 1714, all of which were born in Hockliffe. As you can see, there were 2 infant deaths in the family, which was of course more common in those times. What I have found on a number of occasions in my research, is the re-use of names when an child died in infancy. It seems that more importance was attached to the name rather than the dead child, a situation that probably not occur now. Edward died in Hockliffe on 31st October 1738 and Elizabeth in 1759.
The next generation is again headed by an Edward, this time my 5 x Great Grand Father, who was born in Hockliffe on 24th June 1698. He married Elizabeth Luck in Hockliffe on 27th November 1720, who had been born in Billington, Bedfordshire on 27th September 1702. They had 6 children, another Edward in 1722, John in 1726, Thomas in 1727, Daniel in 1732, Elizabeth in 1734 and William in 1736, (my 4 x Great Grand Father), all having been born in Hockliffe except William who was born in Walton, Buckinghamshire. Edward died on 22nd January 1740 in Hockliffe and Elizabeth on 21st March 1772, also in Hockliffe.
William Hannell, (my 4 x Great Grand Father), was born in Walton on 23rd February 1736. His wife, Elizabeth Ekins had apparently been married before and had 1 child named Ann Ekins, so it can be assumed that Ekins was not Elizabeth's maiden name. William and Elizabeth married in Walton on 15th April 1766. They had 6 children, Mary in 1766, (my 3 x Great Grand Mother), Thomas in 1768, John in 1769, twins William and Edward in 1770 and Francis in 1772, all of which were born in Walton. Although I know that Ann Ekins was born on 4th July 1762 in Walton, I have no idea who her Father was. William died in Walton on 5th February 1810 and Elizabeth in Hockliffe on 12th October 1788. Their daughter Mary Hannell, married my 3 x Great Grand Father, james Rich, in Salford, Bedfordshire on 1st April 1788. See the Rich Family for more information.
